Earthworks Done Right: Managing Ground, Weather and Material Risk
Earthworks is the first thing that happens on most of our projects and, done well, the thing nobody notices. Here is how our teams think about ground, weather and material, and why most of the work happens long before the machines arrive.
Earthworks is more than moving dirt
Earthworks is the first stage of most construction projects and, when done well, often the part nobody notices.
It sits underneath everything that follows. Getting it right requires more than moving material from one place to another. It requires an understanding of ground conditions, weather, material behaviour and the risks that can affect the project long after the machines have left.
Here is how our teams approach earthworks and why much of the work happens before anyone mobilises to site.
Reading the ground before mobilisation
Every site contains a degree of uncertainty.
A geotechnical report provides essential information, but it can only describe the conditions identified at specific testing locations at a particular point in time.
“The report tells you what the soil was at a few points on the day someone drilled,” says one of our engineers. “Everything in between, you are reading. Reactive clay, unexpected water, undocumented fill or rock closer to the surface than anticipated.”
Our teams treat a geotechnical report as the starting point for further questions:
- Where is the greatest ground risk?
- What are the consequences if the conditions differ from the report?
- What is the plan if the team encounters something that is not shown on the drawings?
That thinking needs to happen before mobilisation, not after an issue has already affected the program.
Planning earthworks for wet weather
Rain is not an unexpected condition on the eastern seaboard. It is a known project input that should be considered when planning and sequencing earthworks.
Our teams plan works to either continue safely through wet conditions or recover as efficiently as possible. In practice, this can include:
- Limiting the amount of ground exposed at any one time
- Shaping surfaces to shed water rather than retain it
- Protecting areas that have already been prepared
- Understanding which materials will remain workable and which will quickly deteriorate
A site prepared for wet weather may lose days. A site that is not prepared can lose weeks. The rain may be the same, but the outcome depends on the planning.
Getting more from site materials
Material management can have a significant effect on project cost, program and environmental outcomes.
The most cost-effective material on a project is often the material already available on site. The challenge is understanding what can be reused, what requires treatment and what genuinely needs to be removed and replaced.
Depending on the conditions, this may involve:
- Reusing suitable material within the works
- Stabilising soil with lime or cement
- Reducing unnecessary disposal and imported material
- Sourcing suitable material locally
- Managing haulage and supply risks early
Knowledge of the local ground, available materials and regional suppliers is an important part of this process. It is capability built through practical experience in the area.
Building earthworks capability across the team
We are deliberate about ensuring earthworks knowledge does not sit with only one or two experienced people.
As the volume and geographic range of our earthworks has grown, so has the effort we put into developing our engineers, supervisors and operators to recognise and respond to changing ground conditions.
“You want the graduate engineer and the operator reading the same signs,” one of our site leads says. “The person in the excavator often sees the problem first. If they know what they are looking at, they stop and make a call instead of pushing on.”
That only happens when people understand what to look for and feel confident raising an issue early.
Earthworks is a practical craft. It is developed through training, experience and knowledge shared between engineering and site teams.
Planning for the unexpected
After more than 20 years of delivering civil and infrastructure projects, the ground can still produce surprises.
The objective is not to assume every condition can be predicted. It is to understand the risks, prepare the team and have a practical response ready when site conditions differ from expectations.
The ground may still surprise us. We simply plan for it.
