ExxonMobil engaged Multiworks to deliver the civil works for a new 4ML firewater tank at the Altona Refinery, as part of ongoing site upgrades. The project presented geotechnical challenges due to poor ground conditions overlaying basaltic bedrock, which were overcome through the application of advanced ground improvement techniques.
Project Description
Key scope of works included:
- Ground improvement using Mass Soil Mixing (MSM): Enhanced subgrade stability to a depth of 3 metres to limit vertical tank settlement to less than 10mm.
- Foundation construction: Installation of a reinforced concrete ring beam, structural plinths, and a flat compacted central area, providing a stable base for tank liner and bolted tank installation.
- Stormwater management: Extension of existing paving, grading, and drainage to control surface runoff and ensure site integrity.
- Crane pad construction: Installation of a rated hardstand area to support tank erection activities.
- Civil infrastructure: Installation of tank overflow drainage and water supply pipe culvert crossings at the North access road.
- Risk mitigation planning: Early identification of construction challenges and implementation of mitigation strategies to support a zero-incident outcome.
