This 4.5-hectare site in Coburg was formerly occupied by Austrim Nylex for the manufacturing of plastic automotive components. Prior to redevelopment into 36 industrial allotments and the construction of a new public access road, the site required extensive environmental remediation to address legacy contamination in both soil and groundwater.

Project Description

Multiworks was engaged to deliver the full remediation and demolition scope, managing complex environmental risks across a large and heavily contaminated site. The program involved coordination with environmental consultants and regulatory authorities to safely remove hazardous materials and prepare the land for future industrial use.

Scope of works included:

  • Excavation, remediation, and reinstatement of over 40,000 m³ of contaminated soil
  • Removal and disposal of 30 underground storage tanks and associated pipework
  • Demolition of approximately 5,000 m² of disused industrial buildings, including asbestos removal
  • On-site crushing and recycling of all concrete for reuse
  • Management of contaminated groundwater via vacuum-enhanced extraction and treatment systems
  • Installation and commissioning of active skimming pumps for ongoing water quality control

The project represented a significant environmental transformation of a former manufacturing site, enabling safe redevelopment while removing legacy industrial contamination from a key precinct in Melbourne’s inner north.
