Multiworks’ environmental services division was engaged as Principal Contractor following a major industrial fire at a chemical manufacturing facility in Derrimut, leading the remediation and demolition effort under the direction of Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), the EPA, WorkSafe, and Brimbank City Council.

Project Description

The fire caused extensive structural damage and left a large volume of unknown and hazardous materials onsite, triggering an immediate need for containment, decontamination, and safe deconstruction. Multiworks managed all civil and demolition activities under strict regulatory oversight, with a focus on mitigating environmental risk while ensuring the safety of personnel and the surrounding community.

Demolition works were particularly complex due to the presence of hazardous materials, unstable concrete and steel structures, and compromised containment infrastructure. Multiworks deployed specialist demolition crews and long-reach machinery to carefully dismantle the facility in a staged and controlled manner. Working in coordination with structural engineers, hygienists, and dangerous goods specialists, each element of the building was progressively made safe, isolated, and removed.

Key elements of the response included:

  • Identification, segregation, and removal of over 20 classes of hazardous substances
  • Installation of stormwater controls, bunding, and containment to prevent offsite discharge
  • Establishment of controlled work zones with real-time air monitoring and emergency response protocols
  • Staged demolition of partially collapsed structures using engineered methodologies
  • Use of long-reach and specialist demolition plant to reduce manual intervention in high-risk zones
  • Coordination with WorkSafe and EPA to ensure environmental and structural compliance at all stages
