Located adjacent to the existing Mortlake Terminal Station in western Victoria, the Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is a major new connection supporting AusNet’s 500kV transmission network. Designed to enable the integration of ±300 MW / ±600 MWh of battery storage capacity, the Mortlake BESS strengthens Victoria’s ability to manage peak demand and integrate renewable energy sources.

Project Description

Multiworks was appointed Principal Contractor by AusNet Services for the civil works associated with the BESS substation, a role that included full construction management, stakeholder coordination, and safety responsibilities under OH&S legislation.

The project followed Multiworks’ earlier involvement at the site, having completed the 500kV Mortlake cut-in works for Consolidated Power Projects. This continuity gave our team a deep understanding of the site’s brownfield complexities and operational constraints, insight that helped drive efficient planning and execution throughout the BESS delivery.

Delivered under a fast-tracked program, the project saw the 23,000 m² bench constructed in just 18 days, far ahead of typical schedules for projects of this scale. In total, Multiworks’ scope included:

  • 23,000 m² bench formation
  • 48,000 tonnes of imported fill
  • 240 piles
  • 28 foundations, including 2 transformer bays
  • Earthing, fencing, roadways, and cable trenches
  • Complex brownfield interface with live terminal station infrastructure

Working directly for AusNet and in close coordination with the ISP contractor, Multiworks led all on-site delivery through to handover, ensuring the works were completed safely, within budget, and aligned to AusNet’s energisation requirements.
