Sims Metal Management (SMM), a global leader in metal recycling and circular manufacturing, engaged Multiworks to deliver the civil and structural works for a new static shear facility at their Brooklyn processing site. The works were delivered within a fully operational heavy industrial environment, requiring careful sequencing and coordination to maintain site functionality and safety throughout construction.
Project Description
The project involved the delivery of high-tolerance concrete structures and the integration of essential services and mechanical infrastructure to support the new shear system. All works were executed in close proximity to live operations, with strict adherence to safety, environmental and operational protocols.
Scope of works included:
- Installation of new electrical conduits and rerouting of existing underground services
- Construction of static shear slabs and plinths incorporating 250 m³ of concrete and 25 tonnes of reinforcing steel
- Construction of a new Pump Room including precast walls, suspended slabs, steel platforms, and full roofing and plumbing systems
- Installation and commissioning of upgraded fire protection systems
- Precision fit-out and integration of mechanical components for the shear system
The works demanded millimetre accuracy in slab construction to meet the strict tolerances of the mechanical shear equipment, with all delivery coordinated to minimise downtime and maintain site-wide continuity.
