South Morang Zone Substation

Multiworks was engaged by Ausnet Services for the design and construction of an architectural fence and landscaping works to screen the South Morang Zone Substation. Multiworks’ effective stakeholder engagement process involved close consultation with Ausnet and the City of Whittlesea Council to develop an aesthetically pleasing fence solution that incorporated the colours of each of the organisation’s logos. The resulting architectural fence design comprised a combination of slender steel frames and precast concrete panels to support a colourful plastic façade. The foundation layout design required careful consideration to ensure safe approach distances were maintained for the surrounding 22kV feeder cables. The foundations for the architectural elements included 28 pad footings and over 155 lineal metres of strip footings for the steel frames and precast concrete panels. The decorative cladding material covering the steel frames and precast panels comprised 20mm thick sheets of recycled high-density polyethylene. These were fixed to the structure at over 4,000 locations, each with a custom-made HDPE cap that covers the fixing. The landscaping works prioritised Australian native species including removal of aggressive foreign species and protecting three magnificent heritage listed River Red Gums and the habitat they provide. With over 3,500 new plantings, carefully placed rock work and a sensational architectural fence, Multiworks met client and community objectives while successfully completing the project on time. All while maintaining an impeccable safety record.
