Multiworks’ works onsite involved all civil works related to the contract for the new MTM Cheltenham Substation. Included within these works were building bored piers (600Ø 3.6m deep), Overhead 1500 Switch Feeder bored piers (900Ø 10m deep), Overhead 22Kv (900Ø 10m deep), Undertrack bore x3, conduit trench installation, Building concrete slab, Transformer bay Concrete slab and Brickwork, Security fencing and gates.
All works were completed ahead of program whilst working under the site conditions and restrictions imposed from the interaction with the public and under live rail conditions. PTV commended Multiworks on the management of the Cheltenham station car park (public & vehicle interaction) whilst the retaining wall and the changes to the carpark were completed.

- Undertrack bore, Pits, Trenches & Conduits.
- Foundations for building & overhead structures
- Transformer yard – foundations, block work and access gates
- Security fencing & Access Gates – substation as well as overhead structures
- Architectural feature for the building (Mod-wood)
- Installation of overhead structures,
- Earth electrodes including conduits and bentonite
- Storm water and Drainage
- Substation Asphalt.
- Demolition of Tie Station and removal of debris.
Multworks worked with V/Line as principal contractor to carry out ARMCO pipe upgrade works as part of their essential maintenance program across the network. The work involved the relining of the bottom half of ARMCO culverts with concrete to assist in maintenance and reduce corrosion.
The works were carried out in close consultation with V/Line and local council to ensure nil safety or environmental incidents occurred.
Due to patronage growth on the Melbourne tram network, the Victorian Government ordered 50 new trams, known as E‐Class trams, to supplement the existing fleet. These trams have a higher passenger capacity, additional on‐board features and increased electrical requirements that will contribute to the modernisation of the network. As a result, substantial upgrade to the power supply infrastructure was required including the subject works at Brunswick Substation.
Works involved demolition, exposure of redundant cables, installation of conduits and foundations, new drainage systems, landscaping and the treatment/ removal of all waste as Contaminated Cat C. The work was undertaken in a methodical sequence as the sites was incredibly confined.
Multiworks completed the ‘enabling works package’ for the widening of runway 16/34 at Melbourne Airport. Engaged by the principal contractor, John Holland Constructions and ATS McMahon, the project preceded a $20M contract to widen the runway for the arrival of the Airbus A380. Works included;
- The extension and abandonment of approximately 30 duct banks containing 159 individual asbestos conduits.
- Internal sleeving of asbestos conduits with approximately 2000m of PVC conduit.
- Excavation of existing cables with non-destructive high pressure water jetting and vacuum extraction.
Work shifts commences at approximately 1 am with all personnel and equipment required to be clear of the runway by 5am. To avoid loose debris being sucked into aircraft engines all exposed soil was either plated or sprayed with bitumen emulsion at the conclusion of each shift.
Multiworks was the successful contractor responsible for replacing two bridge decks between Echuca and Deniliquin. As is typical with rail associated projects, these works were required to be completed within critical time frames to ensure the train route was not interrupted.
Multiworks’ crews ran concurrently over 24 hours a day to deliver the project. Works were completed successfully within the clients shutdown timeframes.
Construction of the Sandringham Substation was to assist in the removal of level crossings over the next eight years, improving safety and enabling more frequent train services.
WUC included;
- Pits, Trenches & Conduits.
- Foundations for building, lighting & overhead structures
- Transformer yard (Transformer Yard slab and brickwork)
- Securifor fencing and Gates
- Stormwater, Water & Sewer
- Pavements and Linemarking

Construction of all works were completed on the Sandringham Substation in a residential area. Each day Multiworks was faced with the challenges of continual interaction with residents and heavy vehicle movements in Station St. As a result of the restricted space the were no designated construction/lay down areas. Planning was key to the project as delivery of materials (conduits, steel etc) and machinery were scheduled to arrive/delivered as required not ahead of schedule and remain onsite until used. Multiworks were involved in Multiple rail occupations, these occupations were critical to the success of the project. All works within the rail corridor were completed in these occupations. Planning was key to the success of the occupations. In cases the time frames allocated were not comparative to works required to be completed, in many instances Multiworks had multiple plant and upto 20 site personnel to ensure the timeframes and works scheduled were completed.
The work consisted of upgrading 7 ARMCO culverts located at Kings Creek (2 no 2400 pipes) and Warringine Creek (4 no 3600 pipes). At each location the culverts support one track with form part of the Frankston to Stony Point Line.
Multiworks was responsible to perform all works to apply a shotcrete lining for the full internal circumference of each steel pipe, apron slab and revetment wall.
